Monitoring high direct currents in heavy industry and the processing industry

The fundamental production and processing operations in many sectors of industry require high direct currents. Typical examples are electrolysis processes for metal or chemicals production, metal coating processes, and arc welding technology. Due to their simple regulation and constant torque, direct current motors in all speed ranges are still preferred in many industrial applications.

DC industry – Paradigm shift in power supply

In the medium term, the growth in the DC power supply to industrial plants will also play a key role. Since direct current networks lead to significant system simplification and increased efficiency compared to the existing AC power supply, the Open DC Alliance (ODCA) advocates the full-coverage implementation of DC power supply. Knick is one of the founding members of the ODCA, which has published a complete system concept for implementing DC networks in industrial plants. The trend is still in its infancy, but has considerable potential to change the future due to its indisputably enormous economic advantages. Why Knick?
When it comes to reliably measuring high direct voltages and currents under harsh conditions, the high-isolation transducers from Knick are the top choice. The high voltage transducers with a gain error of less than 0.3 percent of the measured value acquire voltages of up to 4500 V DC or currents of up to 20,000 A (via shunt) and output them as 4...20 mA standard signals. Due to 3-port isolation as standard and the stable common-mode response of the shunt transducers, long transmission paths, high potential differences between the measuring point and the control center, and strong EMC influences are not sources of interference for signal transmission.
