Speed signal conversion on rolling stock

Key facts about the application

Sector

Railway industry | Rolling stock

Application

Maximizing the availability of safe speed signals for all systems in rolling stock

Measurement parameters

Speed signal (current or voltage) from 1 or 2-channel speed sensors

Main Requirements

Non-reactive signal decoupling with SIL3 or SIL4, signal transmission SIL2

Speed signal conversion on rolling stock | makes retrofits easier, saves cost of new vehicles

Many systems in and on rail vehicles require information about the current speed at a specific time. They include brake systems and drive technology – two systems that are crucial for functional safety. This is why the speed measurement devices that are available to the speed signal must function reliably and precisely.

If other systems must process speed information, extra speed measurement devices are typically mounted on the vehicle axles. But space is limited there. And installation and wiring require an investment in money and time. With the P16800 and P16000, Knick provides an extremely elegant solution. The signal of an existing speed sensor is decoupled and made available for other applications. The process is non-interacting in accordance with the SIL safety integrity level. On its way to the controller, the rotary encoder signal is neither influenced or interfered with.

The P16800 speed signal converter is the ideal solution for retrofitting rolling stock. The device helps to quickly and inexpensively implement the comprehensive requirements for odometry resulting from the standardized ETCS (European Train Control System).

Why Knick ?
The speed signal doubler P16800 is the ideal solution for retrofitting rail vehicles. The device helps to quickly and cost-effectively implement the extensive requirements for odometry that e.g. result from the European standardized train control system ETCS.

Product highlights around speed signal conversion

P16800 – universal speed signal converter SIL2/SIL4

Using P16800 makes it easier to retrofit rolling stock with control systems that require speed information, or they make such a retrofit possible in the first place. In the case of new vehicles, the number of rotary encoders can be reduced, which optimizes procurement and maintenance costs in turn.

P16000 – SIL 3 pulse frequency conditioner

Pulse frequency conditioners for decoupling signals from safety-relevant circuits and converting standard signals and impulse signals. Thanks to P16000 at the SIL 3 safety level, the speed signal is neither influenced nor interfered with.

Associated industries and applications

Substations for direct power supply up to the upper one-digit MW range and the grid segments they supply must be effectively secured against short-circuits. The protective mechanism must reliably interrupt high currents as quickly as possible and limit the power flowing into the short circuit.
Knick offers highly isolating transducers for measuring voltage and current. P45000 is the high-voltage transducer with the smallest footprint and SIL 2. It is used for direct current measurement on board all trains driven with direct and alternating current.
